How Much Money Can A Scholarship Give Me?

For students pursuing post-secondary education, applying for scholarships is one of the best ways to achieve their dreams without taking on massive amounts of debt. However, you may be asking yourself, “How much scholarship money can I get?”

Going to college is expensive, and full-tuition scholarships are not a one-shot deal unless you are among the very best of the most sought-after applicants. Even if you excel in athletics and have a 4.0 grade point average, you’ll need a good mix of community service, extracurricular activities, and a great story to stand out from the hundreds of applicants you’ll be competing against.

Depending on the type of scholarship you apply for, some scholarships can award you anywhere from $5000 to $10000. However, this varies greatly as different schools and programs offer different amounts.

There are different types of scholarships;

  • Full-time scholarships;
  • Partial scholarships;
  • Small Scholarships.

Full-time Scholarships

This type of scholarship is on the wish list of every student looking for a scholarship. However, this type of scholarship is only awarded to a few individuals. A child who makes national headlines for his athletic prowess, musical virtuosity, scientific discoveries, or academic achievements may be well on his way to schools that offer full scholarships, or at least very enticing award packages.

When it comes to full-time scholarships, a 4.0 grade point average isn’t enough. Most schools that offer full-time scholarships are looking out for outstanding students. Students who not only do well academically, but also have other endearing qualities. These qualities can range from leadership skills to outspokenness and courage. Athleticism is also an added advantage (depending on the type of scholarship you are applying for). Aside from these, there are still many partial scholarships, private scholarships, and other types of aid that can help cover college costs.

Partial Scholarships

Partial scholarships are much more realistic to get, and students should apply for these types of scholarships. If you’re open to anything and don’t devalue other scholarship programs, you may be on the right track. After all, there are other scholarship programs that can help you a lot in your studies. Also, keep in mind that sometimes the money doesn’t come directly from the university at all. Civic organizations, businesses, and professional associations offer thousands of dollars in scholarships every year, and if you pick up a few, they add up quickly.

However, this is easier to do because this type of scholarship can come from a different source. Unlike full-time scholarships, it’s not enough to be good at just one thing. With this type of scholarship, you have a choice. You can get the scholarship based only on your athletic performance or your academic performance, but not both.

Small scholarships

If you spend hours applying for scholarships but don’t get the scholarship you want, it doesn’t mean you wasted your time. Small scholarships of $5,000 or less can cover large portions of your education. They can also be used for books, dorm fees, and other expenses besides tuition. As we mentioned earlier, any small extra scholarship for your college education will help you with tuition or expenses.
